Cyber Tech Demand is Booming: Five B2B Tech PR Strategies to Capture It
April 10, 2025
The working world is in the middle of a connectivity crisis.
Despite more tools, more meetings, and more talk about culture, many employees are feeling less connected than ever. Remote and hybrid environments have made it harder for teams to connect. And in too many workplaces, “connection” is still treated and talked about like a perk, not something that is woven into the fabric of the organization.
I’ve been reflecting on a session titled “Creating Better Workplace Connections” I attended at Inbound 2024, which sparked some deeper contemplation about what workplace connection means—and what it takes to get it right.
Workplace connection isn’t just about small talk or team-building exercises—it’s about how employees relate to their colleagues, leaders, and the organization as a whole. And the impact is huge, employees who experience a strong sense of belonging show a 56% increase in job performance, take 75% fewer sick days, and have a 50% reduction in turnover risk.
So, how can employers redefine and drive connection in a way that makes a lasting impact?
What Connection at Work Means
Connection is more than just interactions; it’s about how relationships, roles, and alignment with the organization shape the workplace experience. A well-connected environment fosters collaboration and a shared sense of purpose. When employees feel connected, they understand how their work contributes to the bigger picture and are more engaged in their roles.
There are several ways to look at and create a connection:
- Connection with colleagues. This is the foundation. In many ways, connection stems from interdependence—knowing how individual tasks contribute to team goals. Opportunities for collaboration, knowledge sharing, and a culture of support strengthen the bonds between teammates and help people thrive together.
- Connection with leaders. Employees want to feel heard, trusted, and empowered. Transparent communication, opportunities for growth, and autonomy in decision-making are all critical. When employees feel supported by their leaders, they’re more likely to stay motivated, aligned, and committed to the bigger picture.
- Connection with the organization. Finally, connection also means seeing your values reflected in the company’s direction. And when employees understand how their contributions ladder up to larger goals—and feel that leadership is worthy of their trust—it strengthens both belonging and performance.
And there’s one more layer: role clarity. When people know what’s expected of them, see a path for growth, and feel their work is meaningful, they’re naturally more engaged and connected to their environment.
Making it Stick
Defining workplace connection is one thing—integrating it into daily operations is another. Here’s how companies can make it a lasting part of their culture:
- Define
- Create shared language: Develop a company-wide understanding of what connection means.
- Anchor on the workplace: Ensure the connection is embedded in the work itself, not just social activities.
- Look beyond current boundaries: Consider your connectedness with external networks, partners, and community.
- Measure
- Know your baseline: Use surveys or feedback tools to assess current connection levels.
- Evaluate regularly: Track engagement and sentiment over time.
- Share the results: Transparency builds trust and accountability.
- . Make it Matter
- Build ownership: Encourage both company leaders and employees to take responsibility for fostering connection.
- Share what’s working: Highlight successful initiatives and encourage knowledge-sharing.
- Weave it into your approach: Make connection a part of everything from performance reviews, onboarding, and leadership training.
